The largest show of the year is the Joan Harris Centre annual June Recital at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts in Wilkes-Barre. All of the students of the school participate in this gala event that concludes the studio’s season. This fast paced show can be enjoyed by all ages. It is held in the premiere theater in Northeastern Pennsylvania and features elaborate costumes, specially designed lighting effects and rich scenery.
Thousands of pounds of lighting equipment is in the air and focused on our dancers as they perform production pieces that have taken months to prepare. Specifically chosen costumes from designers in New York, California and Florida adorned the hundreds of dancers who showcase their talents in front of hand painted scenery flown in from Las Vegas and Michigan. This is the show that all the previous performances of the year lead up to.
Unlike most schools, The Joan Harris Centre has never treated its June program as a "dance recital", but has always produced it as a professional show, with themes, story lines, scripts and dance pieces that can only be performed on a stage with the Kirby’s capabilities. The June performance is the most extravagant of a family of shows held each year, and audiences of all ages are entertained by the multitude of styles of dance represented.
Song and dance reviews, musical theater, hot tap and cool jazz numbers are just some of the highlights of this performance. Expect to laugh at our comedy sketches and be moved by some of the more stirring modern dances. Even live musical accompaniment is part of Joan Harris Centre Kirby Show. Fun and educational, the June shows at the Kirby Center are great for the whole family.
