Joan Harris Centre for the Gifted/Talented

Policies

POLICY #1: HAVE FUN! Studying dance means a rigorous workout, physical discipline and mental awareness, however, never lose sight that dance is meant to be enjoyed.

DRESS CODE: There is no color or style body wear required, however, all female students must have a bodysuit and tights. Male students are asked to wear sweatpants or work out pants, and a T-shirt. Please, no baggy pants or t-shirts, and no excessive jewelry. For pre-pointe, intermediate and advanced ballet classes, female students are required to wear their hair pulled back away from the face, preferably in a bun and white or pink tights. Male students are required to wear black sweatpants or workout pants and a white T-shirt.

DANCE SHOES: For ballet class, we prefer pink ballet slippers for the girls and black ballet shoes for the men. You may wear ballet slippers in beginner jazz class, however, if your jazz class requires jazz shoes, we prefer they were tan in color. You may check with your teacher to see if this is required. For tap class, we ask that you have black tap shoes. There are several styles of both flat and heal tap shoes. Please check with your teacher before you purchase any to make sure they are the style you will need. The Joan Harris Centre also has quality dance shoes at a discounted price available at both campuses.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance to each class is encouraged, however, if you have to miss a class we highly recommend that you take a make-up lesson. There are generally only eight lessons between each show, which makes every class an important one. Make up lessons, therefore, must be taken during the eight-week session. A student must have a minimum of six classes taken in one eight-week session to participate in a show. If you are going to miss a class, we ask that you call the center and cancel. This allows the school the opportunity to schedule a make up lesson and to give you that week’s announcements.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The last five minutes of every class is for the parents and friends to visit the classroom, receive information on upcoming projects and to observe the student’s progress.

SHOWS: All shows are voluntary, however, to get the most out of studying dance, a performing art, you truly should learn what it means to perform on a legitimate stage in a legitimate theater with professional lights, sound and sets. If you can not make a show, we ask that you tell your teacher at the earliest time so that they may re-block your dance. We encourage the whole family to attend our performances. They are not only designed to be enjoyed by the entire family unit, but also attendance is good for the child’s self esteem.
