Joan Harris, the founder of the Centre always emphasized the value of family. It is extremely important to her that the students of the school feel welcome at the studio, and that they feel they are a part of a larger extended family, the Joan Harris Dancers.
Our annual summer shows at an amusement park is a product of this philosophy. Going all the way back to the 1960’s, our summer session has always concluded with performances and picnics at regional amusement parks. In the past these parks have included Angela Park in Mountaintop and Rocky Glen in Moosic. For the past twelve years, our annual summer shows have been held at Knoebel’s Amusement Resort in Elysburg.
Like our other eight week sessions, this performance is not only designed to conclude a series of classes but also to give the students a chance to showcase what they have learned over the past few weeks. As with our other productions, the event gives the children stage experience, which is so essential in properly training a dancer.
What makes this show different, however, is that its third purpose is to give the staff of the school, the students and their families and friends a chance to spend a day together. The summer show reinforces that family atmosphere that is so important to our Centre. As you walk around the park you will see teachers, student aids, assistants, student representative and all the children of school, riding the roller coaster together, playing games on the boardwalk and sharing a meal with one another. Then after a day haunted houses and merry-go-rounds, we all gather and put on a show in an outdoor amphitheater.
Our annual picnic and show at Knoebel’s is our salute to summer. It makes for a great day and some great memories. Join us in the fun!
